Thinking about buying an Audi Q7? Compare it to a BMW X6 first!

The BMW X6 Overview

In one sense, as the defining member of a newclass, BMW's X6 Sports Activity Coupe has no direct competitors.  There are, of course, a number of vehicles that compete with this unique vehicle based on price, performance or luxury appointments.  How these competitors compare on a point-by-point basis, however, underscores not just the X6's uniqueness, but it's overall strenghts in each of these three categories.  Then add to that something none of them can offer- the opportunity to own the frst of an exciting new class of vehicles!

As the world's first Sports Activity Coupe's, the X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i not only represent an all-new class, they also introduce Dynamic Performance Control, the latest enhancement of BMW's standard setting xDrive.  The perfect complement to BMW's all-wheel drive system, Dynamic Performance Control gives the X6 unprecedented chassis response and handling.  BMW's superlative brake and steering are second to none.  Couple these capabilities with a pair of Twin-Turbo, direct fuel injected engines - inline- 6 or V-8 - and the X6 sets performance and handling standards that other competitors will take years to match.

The Audi Q7 Overview

Despite its Porsche Cayenne/VW Touareg roots, Audi's Q7 has placed its emphasis on luxury rather than performance.  Audi offers two versions of the 3.6 - base or Premium - though the latter is closer to the X6 xDrive 35i.  As the name suggests, the Audi is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 with direct fuel injection, which churns out 280 horsepower and 266 lb-ft. of torque.  Maximum torque arrives at 2750 rpm - commendably low engine speed, but still nowhere near the X6 xDrive35i's 1400 - to 5000-rpm spread.  Nor can the Audi match the BMW's 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. of torque.  A 8-Speed Tiptronic is the only available transmission.  Audi's traditional quattro drive system routes power to both ends, with a 38/62 front-to-rear split that can vary based on available grip.

In terms of equipment, the Q7 is quite luxurious, with standard leather (seating surfaces only), 8-speaker stereo, 12-way power seats, 6-disc CD change and dual-zone climate control.  It also receives high marks for its fit and finish.  The q7 is also available as a 7-passenger model, and as a result it is long - at over 200 inches, it's 8 inches longer than the X6.

BMW vs. Audi

What BMW offers…

  • Unique coupe styling with a bold profile and muscular front view
  • BMW's twin-turbo inline-6: 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. of torque
  • Maximum torque available from 1400 rpm to 5000 rpm, horsepower peaks at 5800
  • Standard 8-Speed automatic
  • BMW's xDrive with Dynamic Performance Control shifts torque front to rear and side to side (side to side at rear wheels only) at all times, during acceleration or coast
  • 19-inch wheels standard, with 20-inch available
  • Weight distribution: 49.5/50.5
  • 6.5 sec 0-60 mph
  • 4 year/50,000 mile maintenance included
  • 4 year/unlimited miles Roadside Assistance
  • 12 year/unlimited miles corrosion warranty

What Audi doesn’t…

  • Tall and long, the Q7 seems awkward from some angles.
  • Audi's 3.6-liter V-6: 280 horsepower and 266    lb-ft. of torque
  • Maximum torque arrives at 2750 rpm, but still can't match BMW's power spread
  • Audi's DFI V-6 can't match BMW's twin-turbo inline-6 for power or smoothness
  • Audi's traditional quattro system can shift drive torque from front to rear only, not side to side
  • Weight distribution: 56.0/44.0
  • 8.2 sec 0-60 mph
  • Maintenance included for 1 year
  • 4 year/unlimited mile Roadside Assistance
  • 12 year/unlimited miles corrosion warranty

"Obscure the lower third of the X6, and it could easily pass as some hot new sport coupe. But once those

muscular fenders and 20-inch rims come into view, it's clear this vehicle is something completely different." - Motor Trend
