The BMW X5 Overview
In 1999, BMW forever altered the automotive landscape with the launch of the world's first Sports Activity Vehicle® – the now legendary X5. Never before had anyone thought it possible to effectively infuse a vehicle of such size and versatility with the soul and athleticism of an authentic sports sedan.
Now, more than a decade later, no fewer than nine other premium nameplates have their sites set on competing with the X5. Unfortunately for them, the 2011 BMW X5 is the beneficiary of more than 4,000 new parts, all created by BMW designers and engineers to create a vehicle that is unmatched in its ability to blend driving dynamics, responsiveness, and agility with utility, versatility and luxuriousness.
Need proof? As of June 2010, no other competitor listed on this page offers more horsepower, more torque, or a faster 0 – 60 mph time than its direct X5 counterpart. Yet despite the clear power advantage, only one can match the X5's fuel efficiency.
The Cadillac SRX Overview
In 2004, Cadillac entered the premium SUV segment with the 1st generation SRX. Though its styling was criticized heavily for being boxy and bland, it earned high marks for its surprising mix of athleticism, power and versatility.
In 2010, Cadillac completely revamped the SRX, and the wholesale changes are evident throughout. Its RWD set-up has given way to either a FWD or AWD configuration. The chassis has shrunk considerably, resulting in the deletion of 3rd row seating. The available V-8 has been shelved. And the styling has taken on a post-modern flair, with an angular, hard-edged, wedge-shape design that is both sporty and appealing.
While the SRX looks like a chiseled athlete ready for action, the start of competition reveals a player that lacks the heart and hustle of a champion. The standard 3.0-liter direct-inject V-6 is shared by its stable mates – the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox – and it produces a somewhat feeble 265 horsepower and seriously weak 223 lb-ft. of torque at a whopping 5100 rpm. The result is a 0 – 60 mph time of 8.4 seconds (Car and Driver), making it a full 2 seconds slower than the X5 xDrive35i. An optional 2.8-liter turbo V-6 developed by Saab is also available, providing a much needed boost of 35 horsepower and 72 lb-ft or torque.
