The BMW X5 Overview
In 1999, BMW forever altered the automotive landscape with the launch of the world's first Sports Activity Vehicle® – the now legendary X5. Never before had anyone thought it possible to effectively infuse a vehicle of such size and versatility with the soul and athleticism of an authentic sports sedan.
Now, more than a decade later, no fewer than nine other premium nameplates have their sites set on competing with the X5. Unfortunately for them, the 2011 BMW X5 is the beneficiary of more than 4,000 new parts, all created by BMW designers and engineers to create a vehicle that is unmatched in its ability to blend driving dynamics, responsiveness, and agility with utility, versatility and luxuriousness.
Need proof? As of June 2010, no other competitor listed on this page offers more horsepower, more torque, or a faster 0 – 60 mph time than its direct X5 counterpart. Yet despite the clear power advantage, only one can match the X5's fuel efficiency.
The Acura MDX Overview
Acura claims the MDX moniker is derived from the term "Multi-Dimensional luXury." The first generation MDX was originally based on the Honda Odyssey minivan, but the 2nd generation MDX (launched in 2007) now stands on its own two feet. The 2010 model year brings with it a mid-lifecycle "facelift" that includes slightly revised front and rear fascias, new technological gizmos, and a few minor engine enhancements.
Under the hood, the MDX still produces an impressive 300 horsepower. Torque has been reduced by 5 lb-ft. to 270, but it peaks at 500 fewer rpm. All this power is delivered through a standard 6-speed automatic transmission that includes paddle shifters. This is the first time Acura has utilized a 6-speed automatic in one of its models, making it one of the last manufacturers in the premium segment to do so. This late showing is a bit ironic when considering Acura's advertising slogan "Advance."
Perhaps more noteworthy is the fact that Acura has labeled the MDX "The Driver's SUV," despite the fact that the X5 is noticeably faster, more fuel efficient, and outperforms the MDX in 70 – 0 mph panic stop testing.
The MDX is available only with SH-AWD (i.e. Super Handling). In normal driving, 90% of the engine power is delivered via the front wheels. If needed, the system can transfer 70% of the power to the rear axle, all of which can be electronically sent to the rear outside wheel when cornering to reduce the understeer generated by the MDX's 57% nose-heavy bias.
