Thinking about buying an Acura TSX? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 128i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 128i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Acura TSX Overview

Acura’s TSX sedan took over entry-level duties for the Japanese maker after the demise of the sportier RSX coupe in 2006. Available with either 4-cylinder or V-6 powertrains, the smallest Acura offers the usual bounty of standard features offered by the company: leather seating surfaces, heated power seats, split-folding rear seat, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, AUX/USB port, multi-function steering wheel, moonroof, Homelink universal garage-door opener, 17-inch wheels, paddle-shifters and Xenon headlights.

The entry-level Acura starts with an all-aluminum 2.4-liter 4-cylinder putting out a scant 201 hp and 172 ft-lb. of torque. The transverse powerplant drives the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission, but offers only an older-generation 5-speed automatic as a no-cost alternative.

With either transmission, the TSX puts about 60 percent of its weight on its 17-inch front tires, which means handling on the 3400-lb sedan is significantly compromised. With an overall length 13 inches longer than the 1 Series riding on a wheelbase that’s less than 2 inches longer, the TSX can’t match the balance offered by the BMW.

BMW vs. Acura TSX

What BMW offers…

  • The 1 Series offers optional 8-way power seats with 4-way power lumbar for both driver and passenger, and includes 2-way memory for both seats.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • BMW’s Comfort Access provides automatic locking and unlocking with the remote still in pocket or purse.
  • The 128i’s optional bi-Xenon headlights are both auto-leveling and Adaptive, so they follow the roadway to provide maximum illumination on winding roads.
  • BMW’s attention to design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 in virtually every 128i configuration.
  • The 128i weighs 3208 pounds with manual transmission, 3285 with automatic.
  • The 128i’s 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than Audi’s turbo inline-4, and offers significantly more power and response.
  • The 128i includes a silky-shifting 6-speed manual or 6-speed STEPTRONIC automatic as a no-cost option.
  • BMW’s magnesium/aluminum inline-6 is unique in its class, and cuts weight significantly.
  • The 128i Coupe sprints to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds with either transmission, a full second quicker than the TSX.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Audi doesn’t…

  • Acura’s standard equipment includes an 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support, but the passenger seat offers 4-way control only.
  • Acura’s navigation features only an 8-inch display with lower resolution, and its dash-mounted controller requires a stretch to use. The system includes no music storage, with no direct access or programmable memory keys.
  • The TSX navigation system offers nothing like BMW’s ConnectedDrive features, and has no Text-to-Speech function, no Enhanced Bluetooth, calendar nor recent calls list.
  • Acura’s TSX still requires a conventional push-button remote for locking and unlocking.
  • Though standard, the TSX’s Xenon headlights are low-beam only, non-adaptive and non-leveling, so their illumination is limited on winding roads.
  • With either transmission, the TSX puts between 59 and 60 percent of its weight on the front wheels.
  • Even in 4-cylinder form, the TSX weighs 200 pounds more than the 128i: 3400 manual/3486 auto.
  • Acura’s inline-4 can’t match BMW’s inline-6 for smoothness, and its power output is well behind the 128i’s–29 horsepower less, with 28 lb-ft. less torque.
  • The TSX offers a standard 6-speed manual, but its optional automatic is an old-generation 5-speed.
  • Acura’s 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder features a conventional aluminum block and head.
  • A Car and Driver test of a 2009 TSX 6-speed (September 2010) produced a 7.1 second 0-60 time.
  • Acura offers the same warranty period, but does not include maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the TSX as $1,059 for the first three years; that’s an additional $30 per month.

“The 1 Series features a traditional front-engine/rear-drive blueprint that is sure to delight purists or those just wanting an affordable way to getinto a

premium-badged BMW. … the BMW 1 Series is a thrilling little car that strikes a balance between sports car and luxury coupe.”– Edmunds.com
