Thinking about buying an Nissan 370Z? Compare it to a BMW 135i first!

The BMW 135i Overview

At its introduction, BMW’s 1 Series Convertibles received glowing reviews about their handling, comfort, performance, taut chassis and all-around top-down competence. Both the 230-hp 135i and the rousing 300-hp 135i garnered accolades for their accessible performance, exquisite handling and smooth power delivery. For 2012, both versions include all those aspects, with a range of updates to keep the 135i and 135i up-to-date and ahead of the competition.

Both cars include specific front treatments for 2012. The 135i adds a revised fascia that includes the innovative “Air Curtain” inlets first seen on the 1 Series M. The 135i gets its own specific look, now including the aerodynamics kit that was optional in previous years. LED accent lights highlight the Adaptive bi-Xenon lights both cars (standard on 135i, optional on 135i). At the rear, LED lamps are also part of the taillight and brakelight assemblies on those models with Xenon lights.

Subtle but significant, these changes ensure the 2012 1 Series Convertibles remain fresh and up-to-date in both appearance and performance, and retain their positions as leaders in the class.

The Nissan 370Z Overview

Though the Nissan 370Z Roadster and Infiniti G37 Convertible share the same basic “Front/mid-engine” chassis, by all accounts the 370Z’s transformation from coupe to drop-top has been far more successful from a dynamic standpoint. There are two primary reasons for the differences between the two cars; first, the Nissan’s 2-seater configuration gives it a shorter wheelbase and higher structural rigidity over its 4-seat counterpart. Second, with a maximum weight under 3500 lbs, the 370Z weighs close to 600 lbs less than its upscale cousin. That said, the cabriolet has also been roundly criticized aesthetically for its bulbous rear view.

Nonetheless, the Roadster is the best Z in years, and likely the best open-top example ever. The Roadster’s standard 6-speed manual can be replaced by a 7-speed automatic, the same transmission in the upscale Infiniti G37. The 3.7-liter V-6, however, suffers the same flaws here as in the Infiniti, generating consistent complaints about the engine’s coarseness and noise. The same has been said of the top mechanism, which produces some unflattering noises as well.

BMW vs. Nissan

What BMW offers…

  • BMW’s 135i boasts a longer list of standard features, with 12-way power seats including 4-way lumbar and memory, rain sensor, Through-Loading System, retractable headlight washers and iPod/USB adapter.
  • The 135i Convertible nearly matches the Z’s performance while offering significantly more day-to-day practicality in comfort, utility and overall convenience.
  • The 135i is a true 4-seater, with reasonable seating for front and rear passengers and 10.7 cu-ft of trunk space with its top up.
  • The BMW 135i includes larger disc brakes, 13.6-inch front and 12.8-inch rear.
  • BMW’s high-performance 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission is a reasonable $450 option on the 135i.
  • The 135i’s top can be lowered at speeds up to 25 mph, so it can be dropped even while moving in slow traffic.
  • BMW places few restrictions on optional features, so even the base 135i can be equipped exactly the way a customer prefers.
  • BMW’s Adaptive bi-Xenon headlamps include automatic self-leveling and active feature and Cornering lights for improved night-time vision, particularly on winding roads.
  • BMW’s navigation includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive, 12 GB music collection and Real Time Traffic Info and weather. The iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • BMW’s long wheelbase, short overhangs and overall design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 with either 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT.
  • The 135i boasts a much broader powerband, with maximum torque available from 1300–5000 rpm. It also provides more torque overall: 300 lb-ft.
  • BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-6 is inherently smoother than Nissan’s 3.7-liter V-6, and has been praised for its smoothness and sophistication.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance.

What Nissan doesn’t…

  • The 370Z includes only manually adjusted seats (8-way driver/4-way passenger, no lumbar or memory). A USB port is optional. Headlight washers, a rain sensor, through loading and headlight washers are not available.
  • By most accounts, the 370Z Roadster produces only marginally better performance figures but extracts a significant price in everyday practicality.
  • For example, the 370Z is strictly a 2-seat car, with minimal cabin space, virtually no cabin storage and a tiny, 4.2 cu-ft. trunk with its top up.
  • The 370Z brakes are 12.6-inch all-around; larger brakes require the Touring model with Sport Package ($45,490).
  • Nissan charges $1,300–almost three times as much as BMW–for its conventional 7-speed automatic.
  • Nissan claims the 370Z’s top can also be lowered with the car moving, but only at speeds of 3 mph or less.
  • The base 370Z offers very few stand-alone options; virtually all optional equipment requires a move up to the pricier Touring model.
  • Nissan’s Xenon headlamps lack an active feature and don’t include cornering lights; further, they feature only manual height adjustment.
  • Nissan’s navigation system combines a 7-inch touch-screen monitor and an awkwardly placed dash-mounted controller with direct access keys. The system includes RTTI and a 9.3 GB music collection, but no internet connectivity nor programmable memory keys.
  • Nissan includes a downloadable phone book, but ConnectedDrive features like BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, recent-call lists, BMW Search, MyInfo, Text-to-Speech or other internet services are not available.
  • Despite its “front-midship” design, the 370Z is significantly more nose-heavy, with a weight distribution of 54/46.
  • Though the 370Z boasts a 32 hp advantage, its torque (270 lb-ft. @ 5200 rpm) lags BMW’s by an almost identical amount, and its powerband is far narrower.
  • Nissan’s 3.7-liter V-6 has never been able to match BMW’s overall sophistication, and its lack of smoothness consistently garners complaints in road tests.
  • Nissan offers only a 3-year/36,00-mile warranty that includes no maintenance. That difference can mean thousands of dollars in additional expenses during the warranty period.

“It'll take a real purpose-built sporting machine to outrun the 2011 BMW 1 Series on a

winding road. … Even the base 135i's naturally aspirated inline-6

is a gem of an engine, gliding from idle to redline on a smooth wave of turbine-like power.” – Edmunds.com
