Thinking about buying an Nissan 370Z? Compare it to a BMW 135i first!

The BMW 135i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 135i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 135i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Nissan 370Z Overview

Nissan’s 370Z carries the torch for the company’s sports tradition, and offers no excuses for its performance talents. The  2-seat coupe is easily the best Z in years, with a 332-hp 3.5-liter V-6 tucked under its striking fastback shape. The standard 6-speed manual can be replaced by a 7-speed automatic, the same transmission in the more upscale Nissan 370Z. Standard 18-inch staggered wheels and 12.6-inch disc brakes give the two-seat coupe tremendous grip and stopping power, making it a favorite among road testers.

At the same time, however, those same traits bring several compromises to the table, including a shortage of visibility and cargo room–both due to the sharply angle rear hatch. And the VQ engine’s aging design–the all-aluminum V-6 has been around for nearly two decades–shows up in consistent complaints about the engine’s coarseness. The interior has also been commended for its materials and layout, but complaints about the overly tight seats have been as numerous.

BMW vs. Nissan 370Z

What BMW offers…

  • The 135i provides almost identical performance while offering significantly more day-to-day practicality in terms of comfort, utility and overall convenience.
  • The 135i is a true 4-seater, with comfortable seating for front and rear passengers and 13.1 cu-ft of trunk space.
  • The BMW includes larger disc brakes front and rear, 13.6-inch front and 12.8-inch rear.
  • BMW’s high-performance 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission is a reasonable $450 option on the 135i.
  • The upright roofline and large rear glass provide excellent visibility to the rear of the 1 Series.
  • BMW places few restrictions on optional features, so even the base 135i can be equipped exactly the way a customer prefers.
  • The 135i includes standard 12-way adjustable power seats for driver and passenger, including 4-way lumbar adjustment and 2-way memory for both seats.
  • BMW’s Adaptive bi-Xenon headlamps include automatic self-leveling and active feature and Cornering lights for improved night-time vision, particularly on winding roads.
  • BMW’s navigation includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive, 12 GB music collection and Real Time Traffic Info and weather. The iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • BMW’s long wheelbase, short overhangs and overall design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 with either 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT.
  • The 135i boasts a much broader powerband, with maximum torque available from 1300–5000 rpm. It also provides more torque overall: 300 lb-ft.
  • BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-6 is inherently smoother than Nissan’s 3.7-liter V-6, and has been praised for its smoothness and sophistication.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Nissan doesn’t…

  • By most accounts, the 370Z produces only marginally better performance figures but extracts a significant price in everyday practicality.
  • For example, the 370Z is strictly a 2-seat car, with minimal cabin space and a tiny, 6.9 cu-ft. trunk.
  • The 370Z brakes are 12.6-inches front and rear; larger brakes require the $3,030 Sport Package.
  • Nissan charges $1,300–almost three times as much as BMW–for its conventional 7-speed automatic.
  • Nissan’s extreme hatchback styling produces a nearly horizontal backlight that seriously hampers rear visibility.
  • The base 370Z offers few stand-alone options; any optional equipment requires a move up to the pricier Touring or NISMO models.
  • The 370Z includes only 8-way manual driver’s seat and 4-way passenger’s seat as standard. Its optional power seats add only 4-way power and no memory.
  • Nissan’s Xenon headlamps lack an active feature and don’t include cornering lights; further, they feature only manual height adjustment.
  • Nissan’s navigation system combines a 7-inch touch-screen monitor and an awkwardly placed dash-mounted controller with direct access keys. The system includes RTTI and a 9.3 GB music collection, but no internet connectivity nor programmable memory keys.
  • Nissan includes a downloadable phone book, but ConnectedDrive features like BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, recent-call lists, BMW Search, MyInfo, Text-to-Speech or other internet services are not available.
  • Despite its “front-midship” design, the 370Z is significantly more nose-heavy, with a weight distribution of 54/46.
  • Though the 370Z boasts a 32 hp advantage, its torque (270 lb-ft. @ 5200 rpm) lags BMW’s by an almost identical amount, and its powerband is far narrower.
  • Nissan’s V-6 design has never been able to match BMW’s overall sophistication, and its lack of smoothness consistently garners complaints in road tests.
  • Nissan 370Zoffers the same warranty period, but does not include maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the G37 as $1,062 for the first three years; that’s an additional $30 per month.
