Thinking about buying an Mercedes-Benz C350? Compare it to a BMW 135i first!

The BMW 135i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 135i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 135i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Mercedes-Benz C350 Overview

Mercedes redesigned compacts bring with them a pair of new C-Class coupes, as the company drops the CLK designation. The C250 and C350 Coupes both bracket the class between the 1 Series and 3 Series, with all-new or thoroughly revamped engines in each. Both ride on the same 108.7-inch wheelbase as the current C-Class sedans, and the neatly folded sheetmetal and upright grille show little relation to the defunct CLKs, instead echoing the all-new SLKs.

Like its lower-cost sibling, the upscale C350 Coupe also sports an all-new engine, in this case a 3.5-liter V-6 with 60-degree architecture and direct fuel injection. This new V-6 shares little more than displacement with its predecessor. Rated at 306 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. of torque, this new powerplant puts out another 38 hp and 15 lb-ft. more than the the previous generation V-6. M-B’s ubiquitous 7-speed automatic directs power to the rear wheels.

BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz C350

What BMW offers…

  • BMW’s 3.0liter TwinPower inline-6 offers more sporting appeal, with nearly the same horsepower, more torque and a much broader powerband.
  • The 135i’s sportier character is evident with its choice of standard 6-speed manual or low-cost 7-speed DCT.
  • The difference shows up in the 0-60 mph times, as the 135i posts 5.1 seconds with its 6-speed or 5.0 with DCT.
  • One reason for the 135i’s performance advantage is its lower weight: 3373 lbs w/manual or 3439 w/automatic.
  • The 135i includes 13.3-inch ventilated brakes front and 12.8-inch rear for consistent, fade-free performance.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 135i also provides more than 10 percent more trunk volume, 13.1 cu-ft.
  • Despite its smaller overall size, the 135i offers more interior space, particularly at the rear, with 37.1 inches of headroom and 53.4 inches of shoulder room.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Mercedes-Benz doesn’t…

  • With virtually the same horsepower, notably less torque and a much narrower powerband, M-B’s V-6 can’t match BMW’s TwinPower turbo’s performance credentials.
  • Mercedes offers only its revised 7-speed auto, with no other transmission options.
  • The C350 can’t match BMW’s acceleration, with a 5.9-second 0-60 time–almost a full second behind the 135i.
  • The Mercedes weighs notably more than the BMW, with a 3562-lb curb weight.
  • Despite its greater weight, the C350 includes smaller brakes front and rear: 12.7-inch front, 11.8-inch rear.
  • Mercedes’ COMAND navigation includes only a 7-inch display and 10 GB hard-drive data base, with no Direct Access nor Programmable Memory Keys. M-B’s system is also part of a Multi-media package that will likely cost significantly more than BMW’s stand-alone navigation.
  • Mercedes’ navigation system includes mBrace, which includes online destination downloads, but has nothing like Text-to-Speech function, BMW Apps, email or calendar download or other ConnectedDrive features.
  • The C-Class’s longer wheelbase and larger overall size doesn’t translate to trunk volume, with only 11.7 cu-ft.
  • Rear passenger space is notably lacking in the C350, with only 35.5 inches of headroom and 50.3 inches of shoulder room.
  • Mercedes-Benz includes 4 year/50,000 miles basic warranty, but no full maintenance. That difference can mean thousands of dollars in additional expenses during he warranty period.
