Thinking about buying an Lexus IS350? Compare it to a BMW 135i first!

The BMW 135i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 135i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 135i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Lexus IS350 Overview

While Infiniti has traditionally taken aim at BMW’s performance credentials, Lexus has attempted to match BMW point for point, not just in performance but for luxury and leading-edge technology as well. From the beginning, Toyota’s luxury division has created a series of feature laden, technologically adept luxury cars. Their chassis performance, however, has often taken a back seat to passenger comfort, with a compromise biased toward comfort over handling. That’s especially true of the IS350.

That’s not to say that the Lexus IS350 isn’t a competent sport sedan. With 306-hp, the 3.5-liter V-6 claims more horsepower than BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower turbocharged inline-6, though its 277 lb-ft. of torque lags slightly behind. The IS350 backs its power up with a 6-speed automatic only, with steering wheel shift-paddles for manual control. Four-wheel discs with 13.2-inch front rotors slot in behind standard 17-inch wheels, shod with staggered-width tires.

BMW vs. Lexus IS350

What BMW offers…

  • The 135i Coupe provides a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT, and either provides a no-compromise sport-driving experience.
  • The 135i’s TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 nearly matches the IS350 in horsepower while providing more torque and broader powerband–1300-5000 rpm.
  • With its standard 6-manual the 135i manages 5.1 seconds 0-60 mph; the 7-speed DCT cuts that to 5.0.
  • Rain-sensing wipers, 12-way power seats with memory, retractable headlight washers, staggered 18-inch wheels and sport suspension are all standard on the 135i.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 135i’s standard bi-Xenon headlights are auto-leveling and Adaptive, and include cornering and additional LED lighting front and rear.
  • Even with its shorter wheelbase and overall length, the 135i boasts 2 inches more legroom in the rear.
  • BMW also includes larger brakes to counter the 135i’s higher performance: 13.7-inch front / 13.2-inch rear.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Lexus doesn’t…

  • The Lexus IS350 offers no drivetrain choice, with the company’s rear-drive chassis and 6-speed automatic as its only powertrain.
  • Although the IS350’s 3.5-liter, 306-hp V-6 claims more horsepower on paper, its powerband is far narrower, with a torque peak of 277 lb-ft. @ 4800 rpm.
  • The IS performance figures are also well off BMW’s pace, with Lexus claiming a 5.6 second 0-60 time.
  • The Lexus includes 10-way power seats but memory is optional. Rain-sensor, headlight washers, 18-inch wheels and sport suspension all are extra cost.
  • Lexus’ navigation system features a hard-drive data base, but uses an antiquated touch-screen interface. The system offers no music collection, Direct Access buttons nor Programmable Memory Keys, and has only a 7-inch display.
  • Lexus offers Enhanced Bluetooth, destination assistance and eDestination (similar to BMW Search), but has nothing like BMW Apps, downloadable email, Text-to-Speech or recent-call lists.
  • The IS350 includes bi-Xenon headlights with auto-leveling, but no adaptive capability nor active cornering lights. LED daytime driving lights are standard.
  • Though larger overall–180.3 inches, with a 107.4-in. wheelbase–the IS has only 30.1 inches of rear legroom.
  • Despite a 90-150-lb greater curb weight, the IS features smaller brakes: 13.2-inch front / 12.2-inch rear.
  • Lexus offers the same warranty period, but does not include maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the IS350 as $2,052 for the first three years; that’s an additional $57 per month.
