Thinking about buying an Infiniti G37? Compare it to a BMW 135i first!

The BMW 135i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 135i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 135i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Infiniti G37 Overview

Infiniti’s approach to the compact sport coupe has been very consistent: provide a large amount of features and a sporting chassis, and season it with a large dollop of horsepower. The original G series cars, both sedan and coupe, have successfully followed this model, and have produced some potent competition for BMW.

The G37 Coupe is the latest example of this thinking, sporting a normally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 churning out 330 horsepower. It is vailable with either rear- or all-wheel-drive, and includes a 7-speed automatic with shift-paddles, leather seating, 18-inch wheels, 7-inch color display, 8-way power front seats, and keyless remote. The upscale Sport and Journey models add sport suspension, staggered-width 19-inch wheels, larger-diameter brakes with 4-piston front calipers and a viscous limited-slip differential. The Sport also offers the only 6-speed manual in the lineup, but the inclusion of Premium, Navigation and Sport Packages boosts its base price.

BMW vs. Infiniti G37

What BMW offers…

  • BMW places few restrictions on optional features, so even the base 135i can be equipped exactly the way a customer prefers.
  • BMW’s Adaptive bi-Xenon headlamps include both active feature and Cornering lights for improved night-time vision, particularly on winding roads.
  • BMW’s navigation includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive and 12 GB music collection. The console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The base 135i offers a choice of either a standard 6-speed manual or low-cost 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission.
  • With its standard 6-manual the 135i manages 5.1 seconds 0-60 mph; the 7-speed DCT cuts that to 5.0.
  • BMW’s long wheelbase, short overhangs and overall design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 with either manual or automatic transmission.
  • Moreover, with either transmission, the 135i is lighter by 194-260 lbs.
  • The 135i boasts a much broader powerband, with maximum torque available from 1300–5000 rpm. It also provides more torque overall: 300 lb-ft.
  • BMW’s 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-6 is inherently smoother than Infiniti’s 3.7-liter V-6, and has been praised for its smoothness and sophistication.
  • The 135i includes more rear head and shoulder room, and at 32.1 inches, over 3 inches more rear legroom.
  • The 135i Coupe also provides a significantly larger trunk – at 13.1 cu-ft, it’s nearly twice as large.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Infiniti doesn’t…

  • Though reasonably equipped, the base G37 offers no options; any optional equipment requires a move up to the pricier Journey, Sport or awd G37x models.
  • Infiniti includes standard Xenon headlamps, but they lack an active feature and don’t include cornering lights.
  • Infiniti’s navigation system combines a 7-inch touch-screen monitor and an awkwardly placed dash-mounted controller with direct access keys. The system includes a 9.3 GB music collection, but no internet connectivity nor programmable memory keys.
  • Like the 135i, the G37 includes Real Time Traffic Info and weather information, but ConnectedDrive features such as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, recent-call lists, BMW Search, MyInfo, Text-to-Speech or other internet-based services are not available.
  • The G37 includes a conventional 7-speed automatic standard; a 6-speed manual is available only in the $44,225 G37 Sport.
  • Though Infiniti doesn’t publish 0-60 mph times, Car and Driver (December 2007) posted a best of 5.3 seconds.
  • Despite its “front-midship” design, the G37 is significantly more nose-heavy, with a weight distribution that varies from 54/46 to 56/44.
  • At 3633 lbs, the rear-drive G37 weighs significantly more than the 135i.
  • Though the G37 boasts a 30 hp advantage, its maximum torque (270 lb-ft. @ 5200 rpm) lags BMW’s by an almost identical amount, and its powerband is far narrower.
  • The G37’s V-6 design has never been able to match BMW’s overall sophistication, and its lack of smoothness consistently garners complaints in road tests.
  • The Infiniti’s interior space is much more limited at the rear, and includes only 29.8 inches of legroom.
  • Likewise, the Infiniti has a tiny trunk, with only 7.4 cu-ft of storage.
  • Infiniti offers the same warranty period, but does not include maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the G37 as $1,062 for the first three years; that’s an additional $30 per month.
