Thinking about buying an Audi TT? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

At its introduction, BMW’s 1 Series Convertibles received glowing reviews about their handling, comfort, performance, taut chassis and all-around top-down competence. Both the 230-hp 128i and the rousing 300-hp 135i garnered accolades for their accessible performance, exquisite handling and smooth power delivery. For 2012, both versions include all those aspects, with a range of updates to keep the 128i and 135i up-to-date and ahead of the competition.

Both cars include specific front treatments for 2012. The 128i adds a revised fascia that includes the innovative “Air Curtain” inlets first seen on the 1 Series M. The 135i gets its own specific look, now including the aerodynamics kit that was optional in previous years. LED accent lights highlight the Adaptive bi-Xenon lights both cars (standard on 135i, optional on 128i). At the rear, LED lamps are also part of the taillight and brakelight assemblies on those models with Xenon lights.

Subtle but significant, these changes ensure the 2012 1 Series Convertibles remain fresh and up-to-date in both appearance and performance, and retain their positions as leaders in the class.

The Audi TT Overview

Audi’s TT Coupe and Roadster have always ranked high among those who value aesthetics over performance, as their striking silhouettes remain unique in their classes. Though the Coupe offers token rear seats, the Roadster makes no pretext of being anything more than a 2-seater, with a small storage space and a load-through area with ski bag behind the seats. The soft-top Audi includes a long list of additional standard features, with leather/Alcantara seat surfaces, Bluetooth, 10-way adjustable power seats, power adjustable wind-blocker, auto-dimming mirrors and climate control with sun sensor included in the $42,175 base price (including destination).

The TT offers only a single powertrain, consisting of the 2.0TFSI engine driving all four wheels through a dual-clutch S-Tronic 6-speed gearbox. The 4-cylinder turbo engine puts out a modest 211-hp, but backs that up with 258 lb-ft. of torque from 1600-4200 rpm. Audi claims an impressive 5.6-second 0-60 time. The cast-iron engine block and standard quattro all-wheel drive place 60 percent of the TT’s 3307 lbs on the front wheels.

BMW vs. Audi

What BMW offers…

  • BMW’s 1 Series Convertible is a true 4-seater, with reasonable accommodations for rear-seat passengers.
  • BMW includes a choice of either 6-speed manual or STEPTRONIC automatic, at no extra cost.
  • Adding BMW’s Premium Package puts the 128i at a nearly identical equipment level to the TT, but adds full leather, 12-way power seats, interior and exterior auto-dimming mirrors and still saves $1,000 over the TT.
  • BMW places few restrictions on option availability for the 128i, with engine and transmission combinations and virtually all equipment available regardless of trim level.
  • The 128i’s $1,300 Sport Package adds staggered width 17-inch wheels, Shadowline trim, sport suspension, increased top-speed limiter and sport seats.
  • The 128i includes both an Aux input and USB port as standard, allowing full integration of iPods and most MP3 players, including charging and steering-wheel control.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 128i’s optional bi-Xenon headlights are both auto-leveling and Adaptive, so they follow the roadway to provide maximum illumination on winding roads.
  • The 128i’s 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than Audi’s turbo inline-4, and offers significantly more power and response.
  • BMW’s inline-6’s magnesium/aluminum construction is unique in its class, and contributes to a near 50/50 weight bias.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Audi doesn’t…

  • Audi’s TT Roadster seats only two, with only modest storage behind the front seats.
  • The TT Roadster offers only a single drivetrain, with the company’s 6-speed S-Tronic automated manual.
  • The TT includes a wide range of standard equipment, including 10-way power seats with leather/Alcantara upholstery, and Bluetooth, but it also carries a $4,700 price premium.
  • Audi’s restrictive trim choices mean a buyer must step up to the flagship Prestige before all the features are available.
  • The TT includes standard 18-inch wheels, but Audi doesn’t offer a specific sport package. Its Magnetic Ride suspension is $1,700.
  • The TT includes an Aux input standard. An iPod/USB adapter requires the Prestige level, or the $2,070 navigation package.
  • The Roadster’s MMI navigation uses a tiny 6.5-inch display, and its DVD data-base has far less memory, with no music storage and no CD-ripping capability. The TT also offers no direct access buttons nor programmable memory keys.
  • Audi’s navigation system offers nothing like BMW’s ConnectedDrive features, and has no Text-to-Speech function, no Enhanced Bluetooth, calendar nor recent calls list.
  • The TT’s Xenon headlights include a self-leveling feature, but they’re non-adaptive, so they’re not as effective on winding roads.
  • Audi’s turbocharged TFSI 4-cylinder can’t match BMW’s inline-6 for smoothness, and it makes significantly less horsepower.
  • Audi’s turbocharged inline-4 still uses a cast-iron engine block, partially accounting for its front-biased weight distribution.
  • Audi offers the same warranty period, but includes no maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the TT as $1,693 for the first three years; that’s an additional $47 per month.

“It'll take a real purpose-built sporting machine to outrun the 2011 BMW 1 Series on a

winding road. … Even the base 128i's naturally aspirated inline-6

is a gem of an engine, gliding from idle to redline on a smooth wave of turbine-like power.” – Edmunds.com
