Thinking about buying an Volvo C30? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 128i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 128i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Volvo C30 Overview

Volvo’s C30 opened up a new market for the Swedish marque, one that it hasn’t visited since the 1800ES disappeared in the 1970s. Volvo makes no excuses for the hatchback’s styling as an update of that original coupe, but the front-drive C30’s credentials are thoroughly modern. These include Volvo’s unique all-aluminum turbo inline 5-cylinder, standard 17-inch alloys, Bluetooth, and a new for 2011 facelift with revised front end, new headlights and reshuffled options list. The upscale R design adds 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, monochromatic paint and an exterior trim package.

The stubby hatchback rolls on the same wheelbase as the S40 sedan, which makes for a roomy rear seat but limited cargo space with the folding seats up. With 227 horsepower and 236 lb-ft. of torque, Volvo’s 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 provides competitive power for the 3200-lb hatch–Volvo claims a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds with manual, 6.6 with automatic.

BMW vs. Volvo C30

What BMW offers…

  • BMW includes a longer standard-equipment list, including rain-sensing wipers, 8-way adjustable seats for driver and passenger, automatic headlight control, automatic climate control, iPod/USB adapter, foglights and three no-cost interior trim options.
  • The 128i offers a no-cost choice between a manual or STEPTRONIC automatic transmission, both 6-speeds.
  • The 1 Series offers optional 8-way power seats with 4-way power lumbar for both driver and passenger, and includes 2-way memory for both seats.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 128i’s optional bi-Xenon headlights are auto-leveling and Adaptive, and include cornering and additional LED lighting front and rear.
  • BMW’s attention to design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 in virtually every 128i configuration.
  • BMW’s inline-6’s magnesium/aluminum construction is unique in its class, and cuts weight significantly.
  • The 128i Coupe sprints to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds with either transmission, quicker than either C30 version.

What Volvo doesn’t…

  • The Volvo includes manual climate control, a single interior trim choice, and a manual 8-way driver’s seat paired with a 4-way passenger’s seat. All other features are available only in various packages that range in price from $900 to $1,800.
  • The C30 sports a standard 6-speed manual, but its $1,250 automatic is an older-generation 5-speed.
  • Volvo’s optional power seats include only 8-way driver and 6-way passenger power adjustment, with 3-way memory for the driver’s seat only.
  • Volvo’s navigation system includes only a 6.5-inch display with hard-drive data base, but no music collection, nor CD-ripping capability. It also lacks Direct Access or Programmable Memory Keys, so there is no quick access to many navigation features.
  • Volvo’s navigation system offers nothing like BMW’s ConnectedDrive features, and has no Text-to-Speech function, no Enhanced Bluetooth, calendar nor recent calls list.
  • Volvo’s “Light-bending” Xenon adaptive headlights are low-beam only. The C30 includes no supplemental cornering lights nor LED illumination.
  • Volvo’s front-drive system places significantly more weight on the front–close to 60 percent in every case.
  • Despite its unusual cylinder number, the C30’s inline-5 otherwise uses conventional all-aluminum construction.
  • The C30 manages 6.2 second 0-60 time with its manual, but the 5-speed automatic manages only 6.6 seconds.
