Thinking about buying an Mercedes-Benz C250? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 128i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 128i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Mercedes-Benz C250 Overview

Mercedes redesigned compacts bring with them a pair of new C-Class coupes as the company drops the CLK designation. The C250 and C350 Coupes both bracket the class between the 1 Series and 3 Series, with all-new or thoroughly revamped engines in each. Both ride on the same 108.7-inch wheelbase as the current C-Class sedans, and the neatly folded sheetmetal and upright grille show little relation to the defunct CLKs.

The entry-level 2012 C250 Coupe boasts M-B’s first 4-cylinder engine in this country in more than a decade and its first gasoline-powered turbo-4 ever. The 2.5-liter inline-4 sports a twin-cam, 16-valve design with only 201-hp (27 less than the V-6 C300), but 229 lb-ft. of torque (the C300 is 221). Despite the drop in horsepower and modest increase in torque, M-B claims the same 7.1-second 0-60 performance with the 7-speed auto. A manual is not offered. The 4-cylinder C250 weighs in at 3419, about 100 lbs less than the V-6 sedan.

BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz C250

What BMW offers…

  • BMW’s inline-6 offers more sporting appeal, with more power and inherently smoother operation.
  • The 128i’s sportier character is evident with its no-cost choice of 6-speed manual or STEPTRONIC automatic.
  • The 128i’s aluminum/magnesium 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than M-B’s turbo inline-4.
  • The power difference shows up in the 0-60 mph times, as the 128i posts 6.1 seconds with either transmission.
  • One reason for the 128i’s performance advantage is its lower weight: 3208 w/manual or 3285 w/automatic.
  • The 128i includes 11.8-inch ventilated brakes front and rear for consistent, fade-free performance.
  • Despite its smaller overall size and shorter wheelbase, the 1 Series has a significantly larger trunk, 13.1 cu-ft.
  • The 128i also offers more rear headroom, with 37.1 inches, and more shoulder room, 53.4 inches.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Mercedes-Benz doesn’t…

  • Mercedes’ inline-4 lacks the premium appeal of BMW’s inline-6, and provides almost 30 hp less power.
  • Mercedes offers only a 7-speed auto, with no other transmission options.
  • Mercedes’ 1.8-liter inline-4 is fairly conventional, with aluminum head and cylinder block.
  • The C250 Coupe can’t match BMW’s performance, with a 7.1-second 0-60 time–a full second behind the 128i.
  • The Mercedes weighs notably more than the BMW, with a 3419-lb curb weight.
  • The C250 includes smaller ventilated 11.6-inch rotors at the front, matched with 11.8-inch solid rotors at the rear.
  • Its longer wheelbase and larger overall size doesn’t translate to trunk volume, with only 11.7 cu-ft.
  • The C250 offers notably less headroom at the rear, with only 35.5 inches, and only 50.3 inches of shoulder room.
  • Mercedes’ COMAND navigation includes only a 7-inch display and 10 GB hard-drive data base, with no Direct Access nor Programmable Memory Keys. M-B’s system is also part of a Multi-media package that will likely cost significantly more than BMW’s stand-alone nav system.
  • Mercedes’ navigation system includes mBrace, which includes online destination downloads, but has nothing like Text-to-Speech function, BMW Apps, email or calendar download or other ConnectedDrive features.
  • Mercedes-Benz includes 4 year/50,000 miles basic warranty, but no full maintenance. That difference can mean thousands of dollars in additional expenses during he warranty period.

“The 1 Series features a traditional front-engine/rear-drive

blueprint that is sure to delight purists orthose just wanting an affordableway to getinto a
