Thinking about buying an Audi A4? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 128i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 128i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Audi A4 Overview

As BMW’s perennial competitor in the U.S., Audi has always lagged behind in sales despite some worthy offerings. The A4 remains at the top of that list, with attractive styling, good dynamics and extensive standard features. And as 4-cylinder engines go, Audi’s 2.0TFSI provides 258 lb-ft. of torque, with a typical turbo powerband stretching from 1500 to 4200 rpm. Add standard features such as leather seating surfaces, sunroof and heated front seats and the A4 seems an attractive package.

In some ways, Audi’s A4 straddles the line between the 1 Series and 3 Series BMWs, but the $33,175 base A4 will likely disappoint sporting buyers. In front-wheel drive form, the 2.0TFSI is only available with the company’s Multitronic Continuously Variable Transmission. Audi’s other optional transmissions–6-speed manual or 8-speed Tiptronic, are only available with quattro awd, which adds another $1,000 and 100 to 200 lbs to the car’s already chunky curb weight and comparatively high price.

BMW vs. Audi A4

What BMW offers…

  • BMW places few restrictions on option availability for the 128i, with engine and transmission combinations and virtually all equipment available regardless of trim level.
  • The 1 Series offers optional 8-way power seats with 4-way power lumbar for both driver and passenger, and includes 2-way memory for both seats.
  • The 128i includes both an AUX input and USB port, allowing full integration of iPods and most MP3 players, including charging and steering-wheel control.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 128i’s optional bi-Xenon headlights are both auto-leveling and Adaptive, so they follow the roadway to provide maximum illumination on winding roads.
  • HD Radio is standard equipment on the 128i.
  • BMW’s attention to design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 in virtually every 128i configuration.
  • The 128i’s 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than Audi’s turbo inline-4, and offers significantly more power and response.
  • BMW’s inline-6’s magnesium/aluminum construction is unique in its class, and cuts weight significantly.
  • That difference shows up in curb weight as well, as the 128i weighs in at 3208 lbs with 6-speed manual or 3285 with 6-speed STEPTRONIC.
  • The 128i Coupe sprints to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds with either transmission, quicker than either quattro version and a full second quicker than the A4 with Multitronic.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Audi doesn’t…

  • Audi’s multi-level trim choices mean a buyer must step up to the flagship A4 Prestige before all the options are available.
  • The A4 Premium includes an 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar, but the passenger seat is 6-way only. Memory is only available on the A4 Prestige.
  • The A4 includes an AUX input standard. An iPod/USB adapter requires the Premium Plus level, or a $600 option on the A4 Premium model.
  • Audi’s MMI navigation uses a 7-inch display, and its 40 GB data-base has half the memory, with no music storage and no CD-ripping capability. The A4 also offers no direct access buttons nor programmable memory keys.
  • Audi’s navigation system offers nothing like BMW’s ConnectedDrive features, and has no Text-to-Speech function, no Enhanced Bluetooth, calendar nor recent calls list.
  • The A4’s optional Xenon headlights include a self-leveling feature, but they’re non-adaptive, so they’re not as effective on winding roads.
  • HD radio is part of the A4 navigation package.
  • Though improved from Audi’s past models, the A4’s front-to-rear weight bias is still 54/46.
  • Audi’s turbocharged TFSI 4-cylinder can’t match BMW’s inline-6 for smoothness, and it makes significantly less horsepower.
  • Audi’s inline-4 uses a cast-iron engine block, partially accounting for its front-biased weight distribution.
  • The A4 2.0TFSI typically weighs close to 300 lbs more than the comparable 128i, but the A4 Tiptronic quattro tips the scales at 3715 lbs.
  • Audi claims the A4 2.0TFSI makes 0-60 in 7.1 seconds with its Multitronic, 6.4 seconds with its 6-speed manual, and 6.6 with Tiptronic automatic.
  • Audi offers the same warranty period, but does not include maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the A4 as $1,452 for the first three years; that’s an additional $40 per month.

“The 1 Series features a traditional front-engine/rear-drive blueprint

that is sure to delight purists or those just wanting an affordable way to get into a premium-

badged BMW. … the BMW 1 Series is a thrilling little car that strikes a balance between sports car and luxury coupe.”– Edmunds.com
