Thinking about buying an Audi A3? Compare it to a BMW 128i first!

The BMW 128i Overview

The 1 Series Coupes brought BMW performance, handling and luxury to an all-new class at their introduction. With this latest update, BMW extends those attributes even further, with more luxury and convenience, greater performance and even more cutting-edge features than the originals. BMW’s dedication to EfficientDynamics ensures these cars combine both performance and fuel efficiency in equal measure–and those measures begin at the design stage.

Whether it’s the 230-hp 128i or the stunning 300-hp 135i, the 1 Series Coupes boast two of the silkiest, best balanced, most sophisticated powerplants in the world. BMW engines have won multiple awards for years, and the current pair of inline-6s stand at the pinnacle of the company’s design–for now. BMW has never confused the status quo with state of the art, and has always considered the leading edge as a moving target.

So it is with these two, the 2012 128i and 135i Coupes, both of which extend their leads as the most desirable cars in their class.

The Audi A3 Overview

Currently available only as a 4-door hatchback in the U.S., Audi’s A3 falls comfortably into the traditional “entry-level” approach more often seen with the Japanese marques. Standard equipment includes leather seating surfaces, dual-zone climate control, auxiliary audio connection (no USB), single-disc CD, Sirius satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel and 17-inch wheels and tires.

Offering a choice of two turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, the base A3 2.0T features a modest 200-hp 2.0-liter gasoline inline-4. The alternative is Audi’s 2.0-liter 140-horsepower TDSI turbocharged diesel, which boasts 236 lb-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission available only on the front-drive 2.0T; the diesel TDSI requires Audi’s S-tronic dual-clutch 6-speed. Similarly, the company’s quattro all-wheel-drive is available only with the gasoline engine. Both the A3 2.0T and the 2.0TDSI feature a transverse-mounted front-wheel drive layout, and other drivetrain options are limited.

BMW vs. Audi A3

What BMW offers…

  • The 1 Series offers optional 8-way power seats with 4-way power lumbar for both driver and passenger, and includes 2-way memory for both seats.
  • BMW includes a multi-function steering wheel as standard equipment on the 1 Series.
  • The 128i includes both an AUX input and USB port, allowing full integration of iPods and most MP3 players, including charging and steering-wheel control.
  • BMW’s navigation system includes a brilliant 8.8-inch display, 80 GB hard drive with 12 GB music collection, and the console-mounted iDrive controller allows instant access to all features through the controller, Direct Access buttons, or Programmable Memory Keys.
  • BMW ConnectedDrive provides such features as BMW Apps, Enhanced Bluetooth, Search, MyInfo, and Text-to-Speech plus downloadable email, calendar and recent-call phone lists directly to the iDrive display.
  • The 128i’s optional bi-Xenon headlights are both auto-leveling and Adaptive, so they follow the roadway to provide maximum illumination on winding roads.
  • BMW’s Comfort Access provides automatic locking and unlocking with the remote still in pocket or purse.
  • HD Radio is standard equipment on the 128i.
  • BMW’s attention to design detail yields a weight distribution near 50/50 in virtually every 128i configuration.
  • The 128i’s 3.0-liter inline-6 is inherently smoother than Audi’s turbo inline-4, and offers significantly more power and response.
  • BMW’s inline-6’s magnesium/aluminum construction is unique in its class, and cuts weight significantly.
  • The 128i Coupe sprints to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds with either transmission, a full second quicker than the A3.
  • BMW includes a 4-year/50,000-mile Full Maintenance Warranty, which covers wear items as well as scheduled maintenance. That means no service cost for the entire warranty period.

What Audi doesn’t…

  • Audi’s A3 Premium package includes an 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support, but the passenger seat offers 6-way manual control only.
  • A multi-function steering wheel is part of a $600 option package on the A3.
  • The A3 includes an AUX input only, which permits music player input, but no charging nor steering-wheel control.
  • The A3’s older-generation navigation features a 6.3-inch display, and its slower DVD data-base offers far less memory. The system includes no music storage, and the dash-mounted MMI is awkwardly placed, with no direct access or programmable memory keys.
  • The A3’s navigation system offers nothing like BMW’s ConnectedDrive features, and has no Text-to-Speech function, no Enhanced Bluetooth, calendar nor recent calls list.
  • The A3’s optional Xenon headlights include a self-leveling feature, but they’re non-adaptive, so they’re not as effective on winding roads.
  • The A3’s remote locking still requires a conventional pushbutton remote.
  • Audi doesn’t offer HD radio.
  • Though significantly improved from Audi’s past models, the A3’s front-to-rear weight bias is still 54/46.
  • Audi’s turbocharged inline-4 can’t match BMW’s inline-6 for smoothness, and it still raises criticism about turbo-lag.
  • Audi’s inline-4 uses a cast-iron engine block, partially accounting for its front-biased weight distribution.
  • Audi claims the A3 2.0T makes 0-60 in 7.1 seconds with its 6-speed manual, 6.9 with automatic.
  • Audi offers the same warranty period, but includes no maintenance. Edmunds.com estimates maintenance cost for the A3 as $1,388 for the first three years; that’s an additional $39 per month.

“The 1 Series features a traditional front-engine/rear-drive blueprint that is

sure to delight purists or those just wanting an affordable way to get into a premium-

badged BMW. … the BMW 1 Series is a thrilling little car that strikes a balance between sports car and luxury coupe.”– Edmunds.com
